Known as ‘the Broken Moon & Last Shangrila’, the ancient land of Ladakh is bound by the world’s mightiest mountain ranges: the Karakoram to the North and the great Himalaya to the south, nestled between the ranges of Ladakh and Zanskar. Enjoy adventurous treks through the mountains and unwind near the brilliant blue mountainous lakes of Pangong and Tsomoriri.
Ladakh was also once a part of the ancient Silk Road. Remnants of the ancient mountain kingdom of Ladakh can be seen in the spectacular mud forts and palaces that have withstood numerous floods and earthquakes in the region over the centuries.
Ladakh is also one of the world’s centres of Buddhism. The gompas (monasteries) that dot Ladakh’s landscape have become an integral part of the lives of the people of the region. These gompas serve as places of worship, meditation and learning, and host festivals during the summer months. Ladakh has several beautiful valleys that are distinct in their landscape and culture, including Markha, Nubra, and Zangskar.
Trekking in Ladakh’s cold desert landscape is a very different experience from walking through the deodar forests of Himachal. Some areas of Ladakh resemble the moon’s landscape (such as Lamayuru), but within this seeming barrenness lie fields of golden barley and poplar-lined villages.
The best time to visit Ladakh is between June and September. The high season is June and July, and accommodation and travel tend to get more expensive then. Villages come to life between March and May with the onset of spring and the bloom of apricot blossoms. The winter is from October to February and can be quite harsh, with temperatures going down to -25 Celsius with bright blue and sunny skies. Ice hockey is a popular sport to watch in the wintertime.
Ladakh is accessible via the Manali-Leh highway or the Srinagar-Leh highway. Both are beautiful routes, although they are restricted by mountainous weather conditions. They are typically open from May or June until October or November.
The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee airport in Leh receives direct flights from New Delhi and Mumbai.
