The Baralachala Chandratal Trek is a six-day adventure that takes you deep into the heart of the Great Himalayas, offering breathtaking views, remote wilderness, and a sense of solitude unlike any other. Starting from Manali with a scenic jeep drive to the Baralacha La Pass (4,830 m), this strenuous trek winds through rugged terrain, river crossings, and surreal mountain landscapes.
Along the way, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of the Western Himalayas and unique high-altitude campsites, culminating in a spectacular arrival at the pristine Chandratal Lake—often called the “Moon Lake.” Ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a raw and challenging Himalayan experience, this journey requires mental and physical endurance.
Days are filled with long hikes and dramatic scenery, while nights are spent under the stars in well-equipped alpine tents. Our team ensures a safe and comfortable experience with high-quality gear, experienced guides, hearty meals, and medical support.
Manali to Baralacha La (8 hrs):
Drive By Jeep O/N Camp
Baralacha La (4830 mts) Topkogongma 6-7 hrs:
The name of pass literally means a summit with crossroads meeting on the top. Roads from Zanskar Ladakh Spiti meet here. From atop the pass superb views of the mighty Western Himalayan peaks are obtained on the way to the campsite.
A walk with gradual ascents and descents through some of the most magnificent mountains cape as here one is exactly in the heart of the Great Himalayas
Topkoyongma (4640 mts) Topkogongma 5-6 hrs:
Today again, another river crossing is involved, so an early start is advisable. The scenery is quite barren in a beautiful kind of way and by evening the campsite is reached.
Topkogongma (4320 mts) – Chandrataal 5-6 hrs:
A walk through similar terrain as the day before, where a river crossing is made that leads on to the campsite of the beautiful Chandratal Lake.
Chandertal Rest Day
ChanderTal - Kunzum:
Over the Kunzum Pass – about 3 hrs and then Drive to Manali (8 hrs drive).
Note: One can start the Trek from Chandertal and end up at Baralachala and furter drive to Leh or Manali, else extend the trek Over the Hampta Pass to Manali.
Good Warm internal clothing (woolen and fleece, thermals), Water proof and wind proof clothing, Comfortable hiking boots with good resistance against the snow and water with a good grip, haversack, sandals, walking sticks, gaiters, woolen/tennis socks (quite a few pairs) and stocking, gloves, cap, sunglasses (very important) , Sunscreen lotion, day sack, camera and binocular (OPTIONAL), water bottle, torch and batteries, though the water is very clean and pure and we do provide boiled water once you are in trek still in order to be extra careful you can get few chlorine pills as mountain water is supposed to be hard.
Day temperature in the sun is pleasant but windy but nights are cold. The temp at night and in rain and snow (especially in Sep and Oct) can really go down; sometimes below zero. so you have to be well prepared.
Note: It is also possible that a route change may become necessary due to weather, inaccessibility through the mountain passes due to heavy snow, condition of the trail and physical fitness of the clients.
